Facility Tours

Take full advantage of your time in Toronto — add one of the following behind-the-scenes tours to your Facility Fusion registration. Each tour is CAD$20 per person. Tours include front- and back-of-house areas and are guided by facility staff who will provide insight into project initiatives, sustainable/energy-efficient features, building upgrades, strategic space planning, innovative technologies and daily operations.

Day-of tour information: All tour registration will need to check-in with registration prior to the tour to receive their badge and tour ticket. Tours will begin lining up 30 minutes prior to departure near registration. All tours are walking tours.


Toronto Union Station

Maximum Participants: 60

Union-Station-Financial-District-TorontoOwned by the City of Toronto, the historic 700,000 square foot Union Station is the major inter-city transportation hub of the Greater Toronto Area, serving over 200,000 people daily. The station is currently undergoing an extensive revitalization, including the addition of 160,000 square feet of retail, scheduled to open in 2018. The mechanical and electrical systems have been upgraded. The facility is heated by steam supplied from a downtown central steam plant and cooled by a deep lake water cooling system, with water supplied from intake pipes located five kilometers out in Lake Ontario. There is an extensive solar panel system for hot water supply and a gray water system for water conservation. This in-depth tour will last 1-½ to 2 hours, covering all aspects of the history and facility operations of the building.


TELUS House

25 York Street, also known as TELUS House, is a 786,000 square foot office building that stands 30 stories tall on 1.8 acres. A leader in environmental excellence in the commercial real estate industry, 25 York Street made history in 2015 by becoming the highest scoring property in the BOMA BEST program, and the first in Canada to install the LEED Dynamic Plaque. 25 York Street continues its commitment to efficient operations holding an impressive 98 Energy Star rating and maintaining its rainwater collecting system, which provides non-potable water to washroom fixtures up to the 10th floor. Learn about progressive systems and programs such as: energy-efficient air cooling; energy management systems tied into the Honeywell Building Automation System; raised floor air-delivery system; window shading system; secure in-building bike storage; shower facilities; and an on-site bike-sharing program.

 

Fairmont Royal York Rooftop Garden

**IMPORTANT NOTICE**The tour is subject to daily weather conditions and may be cancelled with very limited notice, should the culinary department deem it unsafe to tour due to inclement weather. 

**ACCESSIBILITY INFORMATION** The roof garden is only accessible via approximately five flights of stairs; all attendees must be able to make the climb and descent to attend this tour.

Bee Hotel - Royal YorkStarting with an initial investment of CAN$4,000, the Fairmont Royal York’s 4,000 square foot rooftop garden produces herbs, tomatoes and edible flowers in raised wooden beds. The fresh-picked herbs are used on approximately 6,000 meals a day served at the hotel during the summer months. Honeybees live in three designer hives managed by Executive Chef David Garcelon, his apprentices and members of the Toronto Beekeepers Cooperative. Garden maintenance costs are about CAN$3,000 annually. Executive Chef Garcelon grows organic basil, parsley, sage, tarragon, chocolate mint, peppermint, spearmint, chives, lemon balm, pear trees, cherry trees, a green apple tree, marjoram hot peppers and cayenne pepper plants. See why this beautiful garden is both a pleasure to tend and a benefit to the environment and hotel guests.

Enwave - John Street Pumping Station

Heat Exchangers

Enwave Energy Corporation is a fully integrated, sustainable energy services provider. With over thirty years of experience operating one of North America's largest district energy systems and dealing with a variety of energy needs. The strategic collaboration between Enwave and the City of Toronto has enabled the City's downtown core to embrace an altnerative to conventional, energy-intensive air conditioning. Clean, well-priced and highly efficient, Enwave's Deep Lake Water Cooling (DLWC) is the world's largest lake-source cooling system.  DLWC provides chilled water to customers through a heat exchange process that occurs at the John Street Pumping Station which is a unique facility because it houses Enwave's 36 large heat exchangers and the City's potable water pumping infrastructure.  Enwave's closed loop chilled water system and the City's potable water system interface at this location.  Water from the two systems never mixes.
